The campaign began when comedy writer Ariana Sherine saw an advert on a London bus featuring the Bible quote, “When the Son of Man comes, will He find Faith on this Earth?” [sic]. A website URL ran underneath the quote, and when Sherine visited the site she learned that, as a non-believer, she would be “condemned to everlasting separation from God and then spend all eternity in torment in hell”.

Unsettled that religious groups were allowed to advertise websites which warned that the non-religious would face torture at the end of their lives, Sherine pitched and began to write a comment piece for The Guardian’s Cif (Comment is free) website, calledAtheists - Gimme Five. As part of her research for the piece, she called the Advertising Standards Authority, but was told that the website advertised wasn’t part of their remit. At the end of her article, keen to suggest a solution, she proposed:

[if all atheists reading this] contribute £5, it’s possible that we can fund a much-needed atheist London bus ad with the slogan: “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and [enjoy] your life.”

Quite a few software makers routinely release Windows versions ahead of Mac flavors — Skype, Google Chrome and Adobe Photoshop Elements to name a few — and now it seems that poor Mac users can’t even get a decent virus that’s on par with the threats Windows users face.

Yes, that’s right, there’s a new Mac virus lurking out there in the wild, but unless you’re incredibly stupid there’s no need to worry. The virus is technically a trojan, named Lamzev-A, which creates a backdoor for attackers to take over your Mac. At the moment the trojan disguises itself as video codec on what The Register calls “grumble flick” sites — that’d be porn to you and me.

Of course setting the new trojan loose requires quite a few steps on your part, first you need to download the file, then launch the resulting .dmg. Once the disk image is mounted, the hapless victim then launches the app, which proceeds to create the backdoor.

Along the way OS X will alert you that you just downloaded an unknown app and you might want to think twice about running it. Do people really install codec files from porn sites? Probably, but not many. In any case Trend Micro has already updated its software, so if you suspect you’ve been a victim of Lamzev-A try the online scanner.

While this may not a be a serious threat, jokes aside, it should be a reminder that, just because you’re running OS X doesn’t mean you’re totally immune. Just like we have no doubt Google will get around to release Chrome for Mac, there’s also a good change malware authors will get around to writing something truly scary for OS X.

After all, the very first computer virus was written for an Apple machine.

Joaquín Salvador Lavado, el verdadero nombre de Quino, visitó los talleres en los que se fabrica el mural de cerámica; obra que se sumará a otras similares que impulsa Metrovías como parte de su programa cultural "Subtevive".

"Cuando me lo propusieron me pareció una muy linda idea. Estoy muy entusiasmado por verlo terminado y expuesto. Es la primera vez que mi obra se verá plasmada en semejante tamaño y con esta técnica", comentó Quino.

Por su parte, Pepe Romero, jefe de Gestión Cultural de Metrovías, señaló que el programa de nuevos murales de la compañía "permite incrementar el patrimonio cultural de la ciudad y brinda la posibilidad de contar con prestigiosos artistas, como es el caso de Quino".

Ontem estava um pouco nervosa porque comecei a trabalhar num projecto de educação no Haiti e, portanto, em francês - e escrever em francês c'est pas évident!

Hoje de manhã o meu colega Zé disse-me "afinal não podemos candidatar-nos ao projecto do Haiti, por isso ficas comigo no projecto das prisões na Argentina" - que foi também o estágio que fiz em Buenos Aires há um ano.

Curiosamente, hoje de manhã decidi trazer meio kg de mate e respectiva bombilla para partilhar com a malta.

Estava nervosamente na fila do check-in a repassar a história que ia contar.

Que sou estudante, que tenho que levar a roupa de Inverno, que a minha avó fez doce de abóbora... não dá para não cobrar os kg a mais? :(

O casal antes de mim tinha 43 kg: 1,5 kg/pessoa não foi cobrado. Mas eu sabia que tinha bem mais do que 1,5 kg, que 1,5 kg era só uma pequena porção do meu excesso.

Aproximei-me, imediatamente coloquei a mala na passadeira para ter mais tempo de manobra - rapidez, precisão e eficáca.

Olhei para a balança: 0.0 kg. A senhora andou para trás e para a frente com a mala: nada.

No falho da tecnologia, o conhecimento empírico basta. Pegou na mala com o braço e pareceu-lhe que podería não estar a exceder os 20 kg. Ou que sim, mas porque dar-se ao trabalho?

Imprimiu a etiqueta e disse "Porta 10, às 9h25".

O carro trava de repente mas não conseguiu evitar o embate. O cão gane estridentemente. O carro segue, niguém tentou impedir.
Eu corro para a rua, o pequeno rex, assustado, buscava abrigo no meu alpendre (não é mesmo um alpendre, mas na vida urbana temos poucas oportunidades de usar esta palavra).
Aparece o chinês do restaurante do lado: não, não é preciso chamar o veterinário, eu trato dele.
Eu tentei, tentei - ele fugiu com o cão, roubou-o. Deve ser tipo leitão para ele, o pequeno rex...
Agora não posso dormir. Eu tentei, mas devia ter tentado mais, não é?

Odeio o multiculturalismo. Temos que respeitar uma cultura que come cão com medo de ser acusados de colonialistas? E a nossa sensibilidade cultural, não conta?

I open the letter. It purports to be from Hansel and Gretel. They'd like to come and live in my house, but only if I'm not a witch. I look around, at my neighbours and their houses, and wonder who sent it really. I haven't yet decided if I am a witch. It will depend on how yummy Hansel and Gretel look.
Earlier this year, I took part in Home Sweet Home, an interactive installation at Shunt, the performance space under the arches at London Bridge. A cross between a Blue Peter craft session and the web's virtual world Second Life (where you create a whole new existence for yourself online), Home Sweet Home is quite simple: you register in advance or just turn up on the day; then you select a plot from the "estate agents" and are handed your house (upgrading is sometimes allowed). Next you assemble and customise it, a sociable activity involving your future neighbours, with whom you share glue and glitter.

Bernardo dear, I understand your anger, in the line of thought "weapons don't kill, people do".

Nevertheless, the same way many people wouldn't kill if they had to do it with their own hands, people who seek cultural appropriation wouldn't be able to do so hadn't culture been submitted to the logic of the market and hadn’t that logic been protected by the Law.

Once again we are killing the messenger BUT in this case, as the messenger is also killing, he is thus taking a direct participation in the hostilities which, according to jus in bellum, international humanitarian law and costumary law makes him a military target and therefore can be attacked.

And this is war here people: even though Lessig reminded us that this challenging of copyright is not a call to jihad against an industry, Jack Valenti (President of Motion Picture Association of America) called this “copyfight” his own terrorist war. So, even though the “war on terror” is not a classical war, I think these rules must also apply.

Anyway, B., “we, the people of the cyberspace” just want to relax Copyright Laws as they are not even protecting creativity, but some forms of business and by creating this constant fear (terror!) on people of using copyrighted content and being forced to pay ridiculous amounts afterwards is, yes, strangling our creativity.

How many copyrighted material have you used in your blog without permission and without paying – even when you are referring to the author? Would you think it would be legitimate of “them” (whoever this them might be) to put you on trial and condemn you to pay a compensation, even though your use is obviously a fair use of your own culture, is not preventing any sales or diminishing any profit and is even spreading positively this copyrighted content?

And do you see the magic words up there? – permission, trial, condemn, compensation – this is pure hardcore Law, baby, and it is the Law that is killing our creativity and it is the Law that has to be changed – no matter who or what is behind it because, anyway, if the Law is changed, also people cannot (not legally at least) kill creativity anymore.

It is like the Law of abortion, but the other way around :P

Trans Council

Coming to Berlin on the 1^st of May (also know as the Chaostag - “Chaos Day”) is a strong experience that can transform you – going to the Trans Council as well.

I landed in the historical airport of Tempelhof, a small, elitist airport with a charming cold-war environment in the heart of the city. After the last attempt to maintain it functioning, through a referendum a few days before my arrival, it is now doomed to close the upcoming October.

The Trans Council, with more than 200 participants from all corners of the world from Peru to Kyrgystan, was extremely constructive and worthwhile for me to understand some basic concepts or rather just some basic feelings towards writing a precise but humane dissertation.

Overall, people were polite and pleasant to me but also curious for why this young cis-person (non-trans), ostensibly heterosexual catholic female, was in a transgender council surrounded by trans or gays – the only ones that, oh so it seems looking back in time, generally and legitimately take interest and action in gender related issues.

Some reacted quite positively and thought it was great that I was researching this for my Human Rights Master’s Thesis. Others really didn’t give a damn and rather acted as if though I was on a trip to the zoo and was preparing myself to write something sensationalist and condescend. Their empirical knowledge is not to blame.

I hope they are not right.

In my naiveness, I was utterly excited about all the people I could meet and all the knowledge we could pool, in trying to understand what my thesis should discuss, what it should include, what should be the approach, but in the end I couldn’t collect a coherent and unbroken outlook, even within what I thought to be a cohesive group.

One of the central themes in the Council was to find their own voice and the avowal that they are sufficiently strong as a whole to advocate for their own rights and are no longer willing to belong to higher umbrella organisations such as ILGA, who might take action on their behalf but also take the funding and don’t redistribute it, maintaining the installed and imposed representative system.

I couldn’t grasp a consensus in whether it was better to ally with the gay, lesbian and bisexual movement/organisations or not. On the one had it would make them a big strong group fighting for inclusiveness and against discrimination. On the other hand their struggles are however different and this integration leads to dispersion of political pressure and social confusion as many people tend to muddle up transgender with sexual orientation.

I reckon that this networking that I've built will be advantageous in accessing to more sources and in orienting the content of my work.

Concours Jean Pictet

The Concours Jean Pictet started, for the eager Masterini Vera, Maria and Quinten, long before the competition week when, still in Venice, we organised a group to weekly discuss IHL under the supervision of the fellow Masterini Johannes, with a fair use of wine and pizza.

The intense training in Bilbao was very helpful not only in consolidating our IHL knowledge due to the amazing effort of the NOHA (European Master's in International Humanitarian Action) Professor Joana Abrisketa, but also to organise all the material and to strengthen the group ties. It also seemed more of soap opera sometimes.

When we finally got to the competition itself we didn’t know exactly what to expect or what was expected from us. We were very surprised that, innovating the type of exercises that characterised the former Pictets (a situation of armed conflict), the 20th edition of this distinguished competition was a Diplomatic Conference that aimed to draft a IV Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions. The prominent participants in this Conference should address new challenges for International Humanitarian Law such as the new means and methods or warfare, including space war, and should clarify obscure concepts like terrorism, the law of occupation, mercenaries or the privatisation of war.

After waking up everyday at 6h30, at 8 o’clock sharp “Pictet Time” rigorously determined by Swiss watches, we were assigned to our roles of representatives of Bulgaria or Guatemala, Ambassadors of China, juridical advisors of Burundi, representatives of the Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, spokespersons for the nasty Private Military Companies (dirty job but we had to do it) or delegates of the ICRC trying to convince the radical Kurd Party to allow a visit to some hostages/spies (depending on the perspective), even under the threat of being thrown a huge stone at by the nice jury Carmen Quesadas.

We made it to the semi-finals and it was unanimous in the jury that we would have gone to the finals if one of us hadn’t remained silent during the final test (though we know, in Law, that one has the right to remain silent!)

Overall it was a very complete but exhausting experience. Being the only non-native speaking team in the Spanish Competition was a challenge and explaining why a Portuguese, a Belgian and a Bulgarian were representing Italy another one – both gave lots of food for thought on multi-culturalism, globalisation and European identity.

We learned a lot about IHL, but more about each other, about how to manage a team and how to maintain the team-spirit and that is why that even if we didn’t make it to the finals, we know that we won.

Two notes on DST

DST stands for Daylight Saving Time.
The daylight saving means more hours of light/day.
Which means more daydreaming.
On the other hand, this increasing daydreaming is not counterbalanced by less nightdreaming as the hours of sleep remain the same.
First note: why is it that when I make a decision, half of the world pushes me in the other direction?

DST also stands for Disease Sexually Transmitted (well, the official version is STD but you know... let's just assume it´s also DST).
So, because DST starts in Spring (30 of March, on this side of the world) and most of the people want to have sex (even more) and actually fall in love (even more) in Springtime, during the Daylight Saving Time, I wonder.
Second note: beware of DST's during DST: the most severe one that you can catch is love.

Yesterday night I wanted to go to the movies but finally we went babysitting for two 2-4 year olds because their parents were having another baby (another son, so I’ve heard today at 11h).

At the beginning I thought it could be kinda hard because they speak only Dutch and Swedish, but soon I discovered that when you’re 2 you don’t really have much to say. They live in their own imaginary worlds anyway and when you overcome that age of innocence it is very hard to understand what the hell they are talking about even when they speak perceivable languages.

So: it’s all about shooting each other and pretending that you’re trapped and fainting.

Also: it is not that hard to communicate with the eyes when you have a spoon of rice and chicken in your hands: even if you say “open the mouth dear” in a Latin language, they know what they are expected to do.

One of them also tried to look under my skirt, the oldest one, but I had thick tights so no harm done yet.

When I came back home, a bit tired, I was very surprised to see that, in between doing this and that, time flew and it was already 5 a.m.

In the morning, though, I realised that this was because of the Day Light Saving thing (let’s not call it Summertime, for crying out loud) so I felt an enormous well-being (I was worried that suddenly all my clocks were an hour late and started thinking that my house might have weird radiations – which would also explain other stuff).

Anyway, I am very much concerned with the amount of money that I’m stupidly spending, especially on flights that I never use but, as my friend said: It’s better to blow money on flights then flights blowing you up.

She has a point, but I really feel anxious about this incapacity of controlling my spending and even thought of becoming a sex worker or selling a kidney. Or both.

Hopefully someone has a fetish on one-kidney four eyed girls.

But after this, I don’t think I could baby-sit for those two kids anymore, could I?

There’s an accepted idea that the tragedy of the commons has touched everyone and that there is no escape from the somewhat fatalist path we are all condemned to walk through. In this indeterminate state of doing nothing, many artificial ways of escaping it are being used.

What dazed me these last weeks was the turmoil of Second Life.

Here I was thinking that it was just a personalised form of IRC, here I was trying to explain my fellow colleagues that it was not obvious that searching haven in virtual worlds implies your disconnection from the real world, bla bla bla.

But, what if? Would it be so bad to live only in the virtual world and truly disconnect from this one?

Some definitely say no (www.getafirstlife.com), that nothing can substitute real experiences. Being this true or not, if we look at Second Life now, what do we see? Rape, robbery, violence, cheating, piracy (the old-fashioned hardcore one, not the copy-rip-burn one), cases brought to courts (first life courts) by people to whom it happened the same or worse than in the outside world.

It is funny (sad, really) how the inherently bad nature of men (hmmm, yes: men, not humankind :) ) can easily be conclude: we are given a new world, from zero, fresh start and all that. And what do we do with it?

We re-do all the things we were complaining about the first world, in the first place.

Get a first life? Get a second life?

How many worlds, I ask, do we need to overpopulate and destroy until we are, finally, happy?

It was a tough labour, but the critics were good and I feel very optimistic: I am researching on sex, after all.
